Black March is now circulating everywhere. The message is simple: Do not buy any copyrighted music, books, movies (dvds or blu-ray) in March. The goal is to take away money from the companies lobbying for SOPA/PIPA/SFLA (similar four letter abbreviation).
While this is great, a lot of people will not be able to comply, simply because they know no alternative. Here is a tip: Try some Indie.
Why Indie?
Indie (a.k.a Independent) musicians are the ones who are trying to make money from something that they do, without giving away a lot of money to companies. Indie movie makers are creating movies with new, fresh ideas. Indie game developers and designers are creating amazing tabletop and computer games for you.
If you buy Indie music, books, games, movies, you buy from the source. Almost 100% of your money goes directly to the artist/creator. Admittedly, the quality is often far from what established artists can create, but that is exactly why they need your help.
Let’s make the Black March a bright month for the Indie community.
For starters, here are some links:
Baen Free Library: Not strictly Indie, but pretty close. Read the intro, then go to the Books section, where you can find a handful of free books.
Indie Movie Online: This is your movie portal.
Indie Charts: Start here to explore the wonderful world of Indie Music. Youtube is also flooded with them.
Indie Game Bundle: This is the one you always wanted to check, but never got around..
FU RPG: Check out FURPG, if tabletop rpg is your thing.
Greg Christopher: Another indie game designer, to satisfy your tabletop needs.
I could actually put together a much bigger list, but this is enough for you to start. Do some creative Googling, and well.. try Indie.
